Mountains: A Unique Writing Desk Inspired by Chinese Furniture

Combining Tradition and Minimalism for a Modern Twist

The design of the Mountains writing desk by Wei Jingye and Chen Lin draws inspiration from traditional Chinese furniture, specifically the recessed-leg table with everted flanges. This innovative piece combines classical charm with modern simplicity, resulting in a functional and aesthetically pleasing work of art.

In traditional Chinese furniture, the recessed-leg table with everted flanges is known for its practicality and beauty. Wei Jingye and Chen Lin have taken this design inspiration and applied it to the Mountains writing desk. The desk features a unique hollow feeling created by the use of mild elm wood, giving it a modern and minimalist touch.

What sets the Mountains writing desk apart is the integration of Chinese elements into minimalism. This bold approach combines the charm of Chinese classics with the simplicity and modesty of modern design. The bookcase design is not only exquisite and natural but also fulfills the functional needs of furniture.

The manufacturing process of the Mountains writing desk involves a combination of modern CNC technology and traditional handcraftsmanship. Solidworks software is used for design, and CNC milling machines are utilized to achieve the desired form. However, some special forms are still made by skilled craftsmen, highlighting the importance of traditional craftsmanship in modern furniture production.

The Mountains writing desk measures 1600mm x 800mm x 780mm, with the seat measuring 650mm x 600mm x 450mm. The bookcase is primarily created using modern numerical control technology, while the "mountain-shaped" arc back part is shaped manually by craftsmen. The wooden fillet is polished and formed by machines, and the desktop adopts the traditional Chinese "door panel" splicing technology, which is hand-spliced to complete the overall production process.

When it comes to functionality, the Mountains writing desk has been designed with the user in mind. The front end of the desk features a small slope that conforms to ergonomic principles, ensuring comfort during work. The "warped" ends of the desk also prevent items from falling, making it both practical and beautiful. Additionally, a compartment is included under the bookcase, adding to its functionality and aesthetic appeal.

The Mountains writing desk project started in Shenyang in March 2021 and was completed in June 2021. It was displayed in the museum of Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang in the same month. The design team, consisting of Wei Jingye, Wang Yiqin, Wang Ruilin, Peng Tinghui, Wu Wenhao, and Chen Lin, worked diligently to bring this unique piece to life.

The integration of Chinese painting themes, the use of traditional Chinese furniture elements, and the application of minimalism were the key research areas for the Mountains writing desk. The designers aimed to optimize the ergonomic design of calligraphy plans, ensuring a positive user experience. The choice of elm wood for the entire set of furniture was another innovative aspect of this project.

Combining new Chinese elements with the theme of Chinese painting and a simple style posed the biggest challenge for the designers. However, they successfully showcased the comfortable functionality and rationality of these elements in the Mountains writing desk.

The Mountains writing desk is not only visually appealing but also a recipient of the prestigious A' Design Award. It was awarded the Iron A' Furniture Design Award in 2022, recognizing its well-designed, practical, and innovative characteristics. This award acknowledges the integration of industry best practices and competent technical features, contributing to a better world.

The Mountains writing desk is a testament to the fusion of tradition and modernity. Its mild colors, novel shape, and stable structure make it both visually captivating and highly functional. Whether used for work or as a statement piece in a living space, the Mountains writing desk is sure to leave a lasting impression.
